What JMM reads first
Do not start with the headline payroll change. It is a first estimate, and the same release revises the two months before it, so the number everyone reacts to at 8:30 is the one most likely to be different by the time it matters. Read the revisions first, then the unemployment rate and participation from the household survey, then the headline. If the two surveys disagree, that is information rather than an error.
