The Import and Export Price Indexes measure price change for goods and services the United States buys from and sells to the rest of the world, which is where currency moves and tariff changes show up in the price statistics.

What JMM reads first

This is the cleanest place in the U.S. statistical system to watch a currency move or a tariff turn into a price. Import prices exclude duties, so a tariff shows up as an unchanged import price and a changed consumer one, and reading the two together separates the exchange rate from the policy.
