What it measures

Employment Cost Index, in one paragraph

The Employment Cost Index measures the change in what employers pay for wages, salaries, and benefits while holding the mix of occupations and industries fixed, so a shift in which jobs exist cannot be mistaken for a change in pay.

What JMM reads first

The fixed weights are the whole point. Average hourly earnings can rise purely because low-paid jobs disappeared, and the ECI cannot, which is why it is the wage series a central bank quotes when it is being careful and the one nobody quotes when they are not.
