What it measures

Producer Price Index, in one paragraph

The Producer Price Index measures the average change in selling prices domestic producers receive for their output, so it reads the cost side of the economy before those changes reach a consumer receipt.

What JMM reads first

PPI is treated as an early warning for CPI and only half deserves it. Producer costs reach consumer prices unevenly and with a lag that changes with margins, so a hot PPI print is a reason to watch the next CPI rather than to predict it. The components that do carry over quickly are the goods lines with thin margins.
