Enter your birth year and what you have put in. This accrues room from the later of 2009 and the year you turned 18, and separates withdrawals that are already back in your room from the ones that are not.

Worked example — Room if you've never contributed: $109,000. Turned 18 by 2009, the TFSA's first year, and resident since

Try:

How much TFSA room do I have if I've never contributed?

Your lifetime room is the sum of every annual limit from the year you turned 18 (or 2009, whichever is later) through 2026, assuming you have been a Canadian resident the whole time and have never opened an account.

BornLifetime room if never contributed
1991 $109,000
1995 $89,000
2000 $57,000
2005 $27,500
2008 $7,000

TFSA over-contribution penalty by month

There is no cushion on a TFSA: the first dollar over your limit is a taxed dollar, at 1% of the highest excess in each month, with no proration for a part month.

$1,000 $10$30$60$120
$5,000 $50$150$300$600

TFSA withdrawal: last year vs this year

The same $10,000 withdrawal has opposite effects depending on when it happened, on a TFSA maxed at $109,000 of lifetime contributions. This is the calculator's own differentiator: a tool that asks for "total withdrawals" in one box cannot show this difference.

This does not model becoming or ceasing to be a resident part way through a year, non-resident contributions, or the treatment of a TFSA on death or marriage breakdown. Next: work out whether the money belongs in a TFSA at all with the RRSP versus TFSA calculator.

Where these numbers come from

These official sources govern the figures and rules used on this page. They were re-verified on 9 August 2026. Registered-account and tax rules can change, so re-check the linked government guidance before acting.

This is general publishing, not tax advice, and it does not know your circumstances. Your own contribution room is on your CRA notice of assessment and in My Account, which is the number that governs.
