Full self-driving would arrive on a series of hard deadlines
Every dated FSD deadline from 2016 through 2026 missed, by years in most cases. The prediction family is falsifiable and the failures are documented. Tesla did ship supervised FSD and the Austin robotaxi trial, but the "full self-driving on this date" claims were contradicted by the record.
Show 7 supporting points
- July 2016: the master plan promised cars that pick you up without intervention. By 2026 that capability did not exist.
- April 2019: "there will be autonomous robotaxis from Tesla next year", "next year for sure, we'll have over a million robotaxis on the road", and "the first RoboTaxis operating next year, with no-one in them". Zero robotaxis operated at the end of 2022.
- January 2020: Musk walked back "feature complete" as merely meaning the car has "some chance" of completing a drive.
- April 2020: "one million robotaxis by the end of 2020". The target was not approached.
- June 2025: the first robotaxi trial in Austin ran roughly a dozen cars with safety monitors inside, not unsupervised service.
- May 2026: fewer than 30 unsupervised robotaxis across three Texas cities, versus a promised million in 2020.
- A New York Times review of 602 goals Musk set between 2011 and January 2026 found he hit about 19 percent on time. Of the rest, 18 percent arrived late, 17 percent were never delivered, 33 percent had no public update or were too vague to measure, and 13 percent have deadlines still in the future. His record also thinned as the promises multiplied: of the 13 goals he declared in 2015 he eventually achieved nearly three-quarters, while of the 27 he made in 2020 fewer than half were accomplished on time.
I feel very confident predicting that there will be autonomous robotaxis from Tesla next year — not in all jurisdictions because we won't have regulatory approval everywhere.
Musk on stage at Tesla's Autonomy Investor Day in Palo Alto, April 22, 2019, as transcribed by TechCrunch. The qualifier is part of the sentence, not a later hedge, and JMM keeps it attached: the promise was regulatory-conditional from the moment it was made, which is precisely why the miss is about the deadline rather than about permission. He put a number on it at the same event: "From our standpoint, if you fast forward a year, maybe a year and three months, but next year for sure, we'll have over a million robotaxis on the road." JMM keeps this claim on the single occasion it was made rather than stitching it to the 2016 Master Plan Part Deux language; the earlier and later deadlines are in the timeline with their own dates. The same pattern repeated from 2016 to 2026: a hard deadline, a miss, and a redefinition. As of the May 2026 verification, Tesla operated fewer than 30 unsupervised robotaxis across three Texas cities.

What the evidence shows
Twelve years of next year
The pattern is the story: a deadline, a miss, a redefinition that keeps the goalposts movable. "Feature complete" stopped meaning what it meant in 2019. "Robotaxi" now describes a supervised trial. The audit records each definition at the time it was used, because the redefinitions are what made the series hard to score.
The goalposts moved, the word changed
When the promise is reframed after the deadline, the failure becomes invisible. The receipts fix that: the 2019 quote, the 2020 one-million target, the 2022 count of zero, and the 2026 count of fewer than 30 are all on the record. The claim family is contradicted on its own terms.
What he did deliver
Fairness demands the credit list: FSD Beta shipped in October 2020, supervised FSD works for many owners, and a real robotaxi trial exists in Austin. The audit contradicts the timeline claims, not the engineering. Those two records, delivery and punctuality, are different claims and both are kept separate.
