How to research Reddit stocks without buying the hype
JMM uses discussion attention to choose what to verify next, then switches to SEC identity and filings. Attention is a queue signal, not evidence or a trade.
A stock being discussed often tells you where questions are forming. It does not tell you whether the company is good, the ticker was matched correctly, or the stock is cheap. JMM’s safe order is attention, ticker resolution, SEC CIK, official filing, then a public page. Raw posts, usernames, sentiment labels, and unsupported rankings do not become company facts.
What attention can and cannot do
Discussion attention can move a company up a research queue. That is useful because the SEC issuer directory contains thousands of names and readers care about some of them today. The signal ends there. It cannot make a page indexable, settle a factual claim, supply a price, or turn popularity into an investment recommendation.
The SEC warns against making an investment decision solely from social media. A person can repeat one symbol many times, use several accounts, confuse an ETF with a company, or promote a position they plan to sell. Mention volume measures conversation, not truth or value.
The pipeline in plain language
JMM’s collector keeps discussion text in memory only long enough to recognize possible symbols. It stores no post body, title, username, URL, or sentiment. The surviving aggregate is a dated discovery record kept separate from company evidence. A symbol must then match the SEC ticker-and-exchange directory and a unique ten-digit CIK before it can enter the public attention snapshot or influence the official research queue.
| Stage | What happens | Can it become a company fact? |
|---|---|---|
| Attention | Count possible symbol mentions inside the approved API use | No |
| Identity | Match ticker and exchange to one SEC CIK | Identity only |
| Evidence | Fetch submissions, filing, and company facts | Yes, when displayed with source and date |
| Page | Publish the official answer and explain the limits | Yes |
Why ticker matching is harder than it looks
Some symbols are ordinary words. SO, IT, GO, CAN, and AI can appear in a sentence with no stock meaning. A symbol can also belong to an ETF rather than a company, change after a merger, or identify one share class among several. JMM therefore refuses to join social text straight to a page by letters alone.
Three current examples show the boundary. SPCX resolves to Space Exploration Technologies Corp., CIK 0001181412. MU resolves to Micron Technology, CIK 0000723125. DRAM does not appear in the SEC operating-company directory because it is a fund ticker; its authoritative identity comes from the fund prospectus instead.
What JMM publishes from the API
Reddit’s current Data API terms say commercial use or a use outside the standard permission needs a separate agreement, and the developer terms impose retention and deletion duties. JMM records that limitation and the owner’s explicit instruction to operate a minimized authenticated collector instead of treating working credentials as permission to retain everything.
The public output is a top-20 aggregate of unique scanned posts, joined to one SEC CIK and labelled with its window and method. Post text, usernames, links, and sentiment are discarded. The signal chooses which official record gets researched next; it never replaces the filing or supplies a company fact, price, or recommendation.
