What it measures

GDP (Second Estimate), in one paragraph

The second estimate revises the quarter with a month of additional source data. For most quarters it also carries the first reading of corporate profits, which the BEA labels preliminary and revises again with the third estimate; the fourth-quarter vintage is the exception, and its profits arrive with the third estimate instead.

The revision itself is the news. Compare it against the advance estimate and note which component moved: a downward revision driven by trade is a different story from one driven by consumer spending, and the corporate profits series that arrives with this vintage is often the more durable signal of the two.
