An FOMC meeting is where the Federal Open Market Committee sets the target range for the federal funds rate, the overnight rate that sits underneath the price of nearly every other loan in the United States. The decision is released on the second day of a two-day meeting, and four of the eight meetings a year also carry the Summary of Economic Projections, the chart of where each participant expects rates to go.

The rate decision is usually the least surprising part of the afternoon, because the market has been pricing it for weeks. What moves is the distance between the statement and the one before it, and on projection meetings the dots. Read the statement against its predecessor sentence by sentence, then read the projections for how far the committee thinks it still has to travel, and treat the press conference as a separate event that can undo the first two.
